Name Game ...

Currently Reading: Busting Vegas by Ben Mezrich

Over on the website is a new contest where participants have a chance to name several characters in one of my short stories. Silly, serious, strange, anything short of profane will be considered.

I admire your collaborative spirit, and of course I'll get in on the contest, but ...
character names are such a particular thing.

In my own writing, I usually find that I do not so much as name a character as he or she reveals a name to me as I uncover the story.

You can't win if you don't play! :-)

I start characters with the first thing that pops into my head, which is usually something very boring or very silly.

Sometimes, I'll go with names that mean something that is related to their character. On the other hand, naming a zombie Lazarus, is asking for trouble.

I hope you and everyone else who participates has fun with it.

Immediately, names for your folks popped into my head. I'm in the throes of moving (first my mother, then myself, with no break in between), so I'm going to think about it and get back when my brain clears a bit.

No problem, LBB.

I hope the moves go well. There's an old Scottish blessing that goes something like:

May your boxes be light,
May the stairs be few,
And may U-Haul return your deposit.

I'll take all three of those and anything else you want to toss in.
